There’s been a fantastic buzz in the ecosystem of late and a lot of that stems from a series of fantastic events. It all started with Meetup No.2 at Bottle of Sauce, followed by the community trip to Lisbon for Web Summit – and later this month there’s a mission to Estonia coming up. We caught up with Factory co-founder and HBD x Factory Director, Jeremy Bamberg to get his take on the ecosystem, what’s happening with Golden Valley and more.
GV: For those who don’t know you already, Jeremy, tell us a little about you, first.
JB: Thanks, first off it’s great to be involved in such a significant project and plugged into such a welcoming community. There’s so much positive energy and momentum behind what we're working on. For those that don’t know me I’m an entrepreneur, co-founder of a company called Factory, and a Director of our new joint venture HBD X Factory, the selected development partner for the Golden Valley Development. With Factory, we’ve spent the past decade working closely to support tech communities and startups across Europe, building campuses to encourage companies to collaborate and innovate. And with Golden Valley we’re taking this to the next level. I can confidently say this is our most exciting project yet, so we’ll be spending a lot more time in Cheltenham together with our joint venture partners HBD and the Cheltenham Borough Council.
GV: Any exciting updates? What have you been working on?
JB: There’s so much going on right now. We’ve of course been evolving the masterplan design and the design of our first flagship building: Factory Cheltenham, which will be the UK National Cyber Innovation Centre – and we’ll be sharing more on this soon. We’re speaking with a lot of great local and international companies who are interested in becoming future partners or site occupiers, so it’s been a really busy time for us. And personally, what’s been even more exciting is some of the work we’ve been doing together with the local ecosystem in Cheltenham. We had a blast putting together our recent meetup with our friends from CyNam and Hub8 at the Bottle of Sauce. And the first week of November we brought a Cheltenham delegation to Web Summit in Lisbon, which was a bit of a follow up to the delegation we took to Slush in Helsinki in 2021. Later this month we’ll join BPE’s Trade Mission to Estonia, so certainly a lot happening!
GV: Golden Valley on the Global stage. Tell us more.
JB: Yes, with Golden Valley we’re creating the UK epicentre for cyber and defense innovation. Cheltenham has the one of the highest concentrations of cyber businesses in the UK and we want to showcase this exciting ecosystem to the world – and, in turn, bring the world to this ecosystem. That’s why we’ve been leveraging our international network in the tech sector to start to build these important bridges.
We visited the Golden Valley of Helsinki: Maria 01 – ‘the largest startup campus in the Nordics’ and met startups, investors and ecosystem supporters from around the world during Slush. In Lisbon we visited Hub Criativo do Beato, the City Hall’s innovation district where Factory Lisbon is located. There were over 3,000 Web Summit attendees from the tech sector who joined for an event while we mingled with some of Europe’s larger venture capitalists at The Europas. We’re just getting started with our international delegations and hope to pick this up again in 2023 – after our next Trade Mission with BPE to Estonia later in December of course!
GV: You trailed a few things you’re working on in your other answers but can you tell us a few things now?
JB: Of course – stay tuned for some new websites going live in the next weeks. We want to get some more interaction and feedback from the ecosystem, so we’re hoping to do this both in person and digitally. In the New Year we’ll have a series of consultation events where we’ll be sharing our plans and asking for people’s views. Once we’ve set the dates for those we’ll be making sure that everyone knows about them, but in the meantime please don’t hesitate to ping me with any ideas, feedback or simply to grab a coffee.
